Natural England is an Executive Non-departmental Public Body responsible to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Our purpose is to protect and improve England's natural environment and encourage people to enjoy and get involved in their surroundings.
We provide practical advice, grounded in science, on how best to safeguard England's natural wealth for the
benefit of everyone.
Our remit is to ensure sustainable stewardship of the land and sea so that people and nature can thrive. It is our responsibility to see that England's rich natural environment can adapt and survive intact for future generations to enjoy.
We work with farmers and land managers, business and industry, planners and developers, national and local government, interest groups and local communities to help them improve their local environment.
Put simply, our aim is to create a better natural environment that covers all of our urban, country and coastal landscapes, along with all of the animals, plants and other organisms that live with us.
Our work on the Lizard
The Lizard National Nature Reserve stretches across nearly 2,000 hectares of the wild peninsula. An amazing diversity of wildlife thrives here, including especially rare and unusual plants. The heathland, coastal cliff vegetation and temporary ponds are of international importance.
Natural England works with partners to manage the reserve and ensure important habitats and species are safeguarded for the future and that the special plants, animals and geology remain protected for everyone to enjoy. The mild climate means you can visit year round, and the cliff top rambles, scenic beaches and stunning heathland provide an opportunity to enjoy nature at its very best.
